CBT

A well researched and effective approach to treat a wide range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression and more complex issues such as bipolar disorder and psychosis. Based on the idea that thoughts, physical sensations, emotions and behaviours are connected. By changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, emotional distress reduces.

EMDR

EMDR is an advanced psychotherapy which can be used effectively to treat post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to process past trauma. It can change the way in which you think and feel about past traumatic events, reducing current distress and re-living symptoms such as flashback and nightmares. EMDR can also be helpful for other issues including phobias and anxiety.

DBT informed

Is an effective treatment which helps with regulating emotions and associated unhelpful coping behaviours. DBT will help you to develop awareness of what leads to unhelpful coping behaviours. You will develop new skills including emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness skills. Currently individual DBT informed work is available.

Integrative

As a clinical psychologist Emma is trained in a range of models. For some people a more flexible and integrative approach which draws on a range of psychological models may be recommended. This is a personalised form of therapy which may be used for a wide range of issues.

Helpful for: all the above, stressful life circumstances, relationship issues, and others

Dr Emma has post doctorate training in a range of psychological models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). During her doctorate in clinical psychology she trained in CBT, Systemic and Psychodynamic approaches.  The main models Emma currently uses in her work include:

  • CBT

  • Other trauma focused approaches including trauma focused CBT, Narrative Exposure Therapy, Prolonged Exposure

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Integrative approaches

The work will start with a comprehensive assessment of your difficulties.  Together we will make sense of what is happening using psychological formulation. 

Formulation is a tool in psychology that applies psychological theory to understand difficulties in the context of past experiences and what is keeping them going in the here and now.  Assessment and formulation helps guide the treatment plan we will develop collaboratively and will inform the psychological treatment models used.

Dr Emma is a HCPC registered clinical psychologist.  She works in private practice alongside her leadership role in the NHS. She offers a range of evidence based psychological  therapies including CBT, EMDR and DBT
